A rare and unusual map of the North American southwest from an important publication. Sir Jonas Moore was a significant figure in London at a time of great national activity in the sciences and miltarily. Surveyor General to the Royal Ordnance and Fellow of the Royal Society, Moore made the Tower of London a centre of scientific observation and patronage including, amongst his students two budding astronomers, John Flamsteed and Edmund Halley. Sir Jonas Moore's "A New Systeme of the mathematicks" comprised text on numerous sciences including mathematics, cosmography, navigation and geography. Volume two includes a series of maps of the whole world. Although only two of these maps have a signature, that of the young Herman Moll, their style is typically Moll's and it is reasonable to consider these maps amongst his earliest works. This map shows California as a large island and also named "New Albion" with mainland Mexico towards the midwest. A charming and very scarce map.
