A magnificent, rare and important map of the town of Newcastle, dissected, mounted on canvas and edged in green ribbon, folding into the original maroon leather embossed slipcase with the original reference index booklet. The best map of the town, when published, this was finely engraved by William Lizars in Edinburgh after Thomas Oliver's survey of 1830. At the large scale of 3 chains to an inch (approximately 26 inches to one mile) the plan depicts precise detail of the town as it appeared towards the end of the Georgian era and before the great fire and explosion that gutted so much of the town in 1854. Unusually, the map is accompanied by the very rarely found index pamphlet listing subscribers and owners of each of the hundreds of properties identified by numbered keys for each parish or "Chapelry". This is the first, and very scarce, version of a map reissued at smaller scales during the next 20 years, the finest engraved, with an illustration, "Drawn on the spot" by the surveyor Oliver of the town in panorama from the south and a fine example of urban cartography. The slipcase bears the label of Newcastle book/case maker Thomas Wedell. With a little light and negligible print offset, this is a good example of a lovely map.
