A fascinating and scarce volume of text and thematic maps. 4to. Rebacked cont. boards, front end-paper with repaired tear, letterpress title, advertisement leaf, contents, 11pp memoir, explanation of maps, 12 maps, 161pp, 9pp subscriber list. A little worming, foxing but uncut. The Reverend Ezekiel Blomfield, died at the young age of 40 leaving his wife and eight children. This volume, published posthumously, is a summary of six lectures along Blomfield's fields of interest combining science with philosophy and discussing biblical, ethnographic, political and recent history. The twelve maps are of east and west hemispheres indicating, by way of shading and colouration, "the colours of the inhabitants", "the different conditions of nations, namely, ... Barbarians, ... fishing tribes, ... pastoral, commercial." and so on, also religious systems and areas known to the ancients ... The book was commissioned and printed by Brightly and Childs in Bungay, Suffolk, near to Blomfield's parish of Wortwell and was well subscribed - the list including Royalty, Peers, senior churchmen and the eminent abolitionist William Wilberforce.
