A Correct Plan Of The Isle Of Man : P. Fannin

A magnificent and very rare map/chart of the Isle of Man by one-time resident and hydrographer Peter Fannin - the best and most influential map of the island for the next fifty years. At the large scale of almost one inch to the mile, the map is distinguished by its pictorial style showing the hills in profile, villages and major residences in birds-eye, roads and paths and, along the coastline depths, notations and vignettes of seaviews. The 'Correct Plan of the Isle of Man', was engraved in London by H. Ashby from Fannin's survey made , in Jan 1789 from whence it formed the basis of most maps of the Island for the next forty years. The island shape with its over square Jurby Point is considerably less accurate than the maritime survey of Mackenzie of 1775. However his representation of the hill masses of the Island was a major improvement on earlier maps. He also gave an indication for the first time of the roads on the Island as well as the first town plan of Douglas. Overall a very good example barring one small and insignificant area at lower left where manuscript ink from the verso shows through.
