Planisferio Antico : A. Bianco / V. Formaleoni

An eighteenth century engraving of a renowned medieval Mappa-Mundi. Published in a historical account of antiquities of significance held in the Biblioteca di St. Marco, this fascinating map by Andrea Bianco shows the world in typical form for the period - centred on Jerusalem and with north to the left of the design. Understandably, the Mediterranean coasts are clearly recognisable and the Arabian peninsula helps to differentiate between Africa and Asia. The western coastlines are of particular interest for their "modern" appearance - the British Isles, Iberia and the Baltic shown relatively accurately reflecting the influence of contemporary portulan charts. Further into the Atlantic various, here, unnamed islands indicate some belief in land to the west of Europe - arguably the fabled Antilles, ie the West Indies and today's America. The map is well detailed with placenames and vignettes.
