An interesting and decorative world planisphere, derived from Cassini's projection published in 1696, with the North Pole at its centre. The planisphere is held on the broad shoulders and stone pillar of Atlas, a Titan. Geographically the map reflects Cassini's attempts to determine with greater accuracy than before, the longitude of various locations around the world including Cape Town, Goa and Peking. The map also depicts a number of interesting features - Australia is shown extending across sixty degrees so that the eastern end lies north of New Zealand, California is shown as an island (a rather late depiction) and even the Great Wall of China is visible. The map was published by Louis Renard in 1715 in his "Atlas De La Navigation Et Du Commerce ...".
