A scarce and fascinating example of an innovative approach to displaying the advance of history through cartographic means. 16 maps are shown with their full detail "hidden" by dark clouds which appear to roll away as European knowledge of world beyond became known. First published in 1830, this is a slightly reduced size edition with "an Historical Narrative" by Edward Quin of Magdalen, Oxford and Lincoln's Inn London. Quin's atlas shows the world as it unfolded from 'The Creation' to the year 1498 and the discovery of America. Engraved by Sidney Hall, the maps include the Empire of Alexander the Great, the Roman Empire in the Augustan Age and the Empire of Charlemagne amongst many others. Sixteen maps in overall fine condition, 15 approx 270 x 290 mms, the last 270 x 380 mms, with 52 pp text. Orig boards with front label, loose and binding broken but a good reading copy.
