Voyages Du Capitaine Lemuel Gulliver, En Divers Pays ... : J. Swift

Five maps from an early French edition of Jonathan Swift's renowned satire on the state of English society in the first half of the seventeenth century. Maps for the book are credited to Herman Moll and, if not engraved by him, then produced under his direction, and to give added credibility were based on elements extracted from Moll's own maps. Swift writes that "popular tastes demanded maps in books of voyages" even fictional, satirical travels and that Gulliver's "worthy friend Mr Herman Moll" was responsible (see D. Reinhartz "The Cartographer And The Literati - Herman Moll And His Intellectual Circle" p92). This group of five maps were taken from an incomplete and early French edition of the "Travels ...." published by P. Gosse and J. Neaulme in the Hague. Unsigned, we cannot identify the engraver although they are close copies of the originals. Map 1.) The island of Lilliput, to the south-west of Sumatra and with an outline of Van diemen's land to the south east. Map 2.) Brobdingnag, north of California, suggested as an island. Map 3.) Various islands to the east of Japan and the Sea of Korea. Map 4.) Balnibarbi. Map 5.) Houyhnhnms Land off Lewins Land. The maps are accompanied by a portrait of the traveller himself, and all except no 4 which has a repaired tear into the image, in good condition. A fascinating group of a rare and distinctive set of maps.
