Folio, scuffed calf and boards, marbled endpapers, title, preface, contents, general and 42 county maps and 4-sht Wales. A good example of an interesting and attractive county atlases using maps first prepared and engraved by John and Charles Walker. Those maps were very popular and reissued in a variety of formats, as folding maps, in county handbooks, overprinted with hunting boundaries and so on and, here, in their final version, as lithographed and heavily reworked atlas maps. Lacking any reference to their origins, the maps, printed from a lithographic process, include railways, symbols indicating the sizes and significance of towns, roads (including symbols indicating "Dangerous Hills") at a time when motorised transport was in its infancy, and so on. Coastal counties have Life Boat and Coast Guard Stations marked and, indicative of how up-to-date the maps were, that of Essex has marked on it red crosses indicating locations of Earthquake Shock, April 22nd, 1884. With bright and attractive original colour, this is a good example of a scarce atlas.
