Zwolffter Theil Der Newen Welt : M. Colijn / T. De Bry

A good example of this scarce, finely engraved titlepage with its small but significant map - only the second representation of California as an Island. The design was originally created for Michel Colijn's edition of Herrera's collection of voyages published in 1622 and which showed eight Aztec scenes, the Castillian Arms and a small map said to be based on a Spanish account, in Dutch hands, describing California as an Island. This small map's outline is otherwise quite accurate for the period although a distinct north west passage is also apparent. Within three years the concept of California as an Island became accepted through the maps of both Dutch and English mapmakers, but not before this map, copied from that 1622 original had appeared. Although lacking the engraver's signature, this is a finer engraving than the predecessor and has additional features in fine roundel portraits of Columbus and Vespucci and full-length images of Magellan and Pisaro, copied from those on De Bry's 1596 map of America. The title lettering for the twelfth part of De Bry's "Grand Voyages" was printed from a separate block - to allow other language text editions to use the same engraved title surround, and is here in its original German form. One small margin weakness repaired, a small surface scuff near Labrador and lightly age-toned, otherwise a nice example of this rare and fascinating California item.
