Ordnance Survey Of The Isle Wight And Part Of Hampshire : Ordnance Survey

A good example of one of the first states of first Ordnance Survey map of island and adjacent coastline from Highcliff to Fareham and Havant. A fine and detailed at the large scale of one inch to the mile. The Ordnance Survey remains the nation's official mapmaking agency and has, over two hundred years, produced fine large-scale maps of all areas and set the standard for many other national mapmaking bodies. Sectional maps, as opposed to county maps, covered the whole country but for certain areas, in the Survey's early days maps were created to cover specific areas - this being devoted to the island and used, for the first time in print, the title of the agency "Ordnance Survey ...". Early issue Ordnance Survey maps are not easy to date except for their update detail where comparison of a number of sheets provides a sequence. This example appears to be of State 12, as noted by Hellyer and Oliver, having the addition of its sheet price "Six Shillings" at top left and insertion of the Gosport Junction Railway. In good condition, with just a small surface scuff in the upper border, this map has been dissected and mounted onto folding cloth.
