A rare and finely engraved map of all North Africa based on the classical geographer Claudius Ptolemy's co-ordinates produced by Giacomo Gastaldi, astronomer, cartographer and engineer. Decorated with images of an elephant and also a bizarre beast, part man, part dog and bearing a stick. Gastaldi's edition of the "Geographia ..." is important for the incorporation of a number of modern maps of the New World and as the first small format 'pocket' atlas.
