A rare and interesting Ptolemaic map of the north-western African Atlantic and Mediterranean coastline includes southern Spain, where the Pillars of Hercules are shown. This finely engraved miniature appeared in "the first pocket atlas" - Giacomo Gastaldi's edition of Ptolemy's Geographia, a combination of that classical cartography with modern maps based on the latest reports including accounts from the great voyages of discovery. The map, on a trapezoid projection is decorated with images of exotic creatures and a ship, and has mountains and rivers marked.
