recent arrival
A strong, early impression of this excellent sea chart of the south coast centred on the Isle of Wight, with the Solent from Lymington to Southampton, Portsmouth and Hayling Island in good detail. Captain Greenville Collins' "Great Britain's Coasting Pilot" was the first systematic survey of the British coastline, and the first sea atlas produced in London from original surveys. Collins was appointed to the task by Charles II in 1681 and published his first edition in 1693, beginning with the south coast, and covered all the British coasts except for western Ireland and western Scotland. The charts were reissued, with very little updating, until as late as 1792. An elaborate cartouche contains a dedication "To the Rt. Hon. Edward Russell Admiral of their Majesties' fleet ...". Early examples of Collins's charts are rare and display the fineness of engraving missing in latter printings where the detail becomes lost. Despite a little old waterstaining along the lower border this is an attractive example.
