recent arrival
An attractive and rare plate from John Bevis renowned but very rare celestial atlas "Atlas Celeste". This plate "Tab XXVIII" is dedicated "To the Reverend John Conybear, Dean of Christ Church Colledge Oxford" and shows the constellations of Scorpio and Libra in their traditional figurative forms as a scorpion and pair of scales. John Bevis was an accomplished astronomer who began compiling star charts and lists for a new, updated, atlas from around 1740 but which never, within his lifetime, achieved publication. His accidental death, falling from his telescope in 1771, left his project unfinished and only to be published in a newly engraved form some fifteen years later.
