Texas : J. H. Colton

An interesting and attractive detailed map of the newly established Texas State with the publication date of 1855, nine years after Statehood was achieved. Colton & Co was one of the best and most prolific of United States cartographic publishers producing atlases and separately issued travelling and wall maps of all parts of the growing United States and the World. Maps were typically, as here, set in elaborate strapwork or foliate surrounds. This map shows counties well defined in the eastern half of the state while the western side remains to be settled. A good example with tissue backed protected margins.
