South Polar Regions : J. Bartholomew

A fine map of the Antarctic continent as known in the second decade of the twentieth century. This large-scale map shows those areas of land mapped at this time leaving undiscovered coasts indicated only by the varying degrees of sea-shading. All detail is restricted to the land adjacent to the Bellingshausen Sea and South Victoria Land where the names of Amundsen, Scott and, earlier, Shackleton are marked against their furthest south locations. In certain areas their tracks are marked although the scale does not allow for great detail in this respect. "The Times Atlas" was first published in 1895 and remains in publication today - it was one of the best and most widely distributed atlases of the twentieth century. With maps prepared by the eminent Victorian mapmaking publishing house of Bartholomew, in Edinburgh, active for almost 150 years, their maps combined detail and fine presentation of physical and toponomical detail. This map gives a vivid image of the continent as it became defined. Light centrefold stain but very acceptable.
