Although he only issued one world atlas, John Tallis is among the best known of all map-makers and publishers. The maps were issued in 1851 to commemorate the Great Exhibition in London and are considered the last series of decorative maps of the world, combining fine cartographical detail within an elaborate and attractive border. This particular map is one of the few to be revised and used to show contemporary political events with the vignettes removed and with panels of text describing aspects of the recent Indian Mutiny - "Events ...", "Dates of the Principal Massacres", "and "Distances from Calcutta To The Principal Localities In Which The Mutinies Have Taken Place".
