recent arrival
A magnificent and decorative example of this rare and important chart - the first printed chart of the English coast from The Solent to Rye and Dover. The chart, engraved by Joannes Doetechum appeared in the first collection of charts of the western European coasts, the "Spieghel Der Zeevaerdt". Lucas Janszoon Waghenaer's chart of this section of the Channel is one of the most distinctive and artistic delineations of the region. Coastal towns are clearly named, inland detail is given and detailed coastal profiles extend the length of the engraving. Fields and livestock are shown inland while decorative features include ships, sea monsters, an extravagant compass rose, and strap-work embellished cartouche and mileage scale. Waghenaer's "Spieghel Der Zeevaert", appeared in various editions over about twenty years and provides unparalleled coverage of these areas during a period of great European upheaval, including the events surrounding Spain's attempted invasion of England just a few years after this chart was published. This example is of the chart's second state with additional Latin title within the cartouche and Latin verso text.
