Attractively coloured map featuring North America, although it also shows parts of Europe, Africa and Asia. This interesting map was one of a series prepared by Robert de Vaugondy for Diderot's Encyclopedia showing various cartographic hypotheses for the North American continent with particular reference to the search for a passage across the northwest. The most prominent feature is the Northwest Passage connecting the Arctic with Repulse Bay at the top of Hudson Bay. Alaska has an unusual elongated shape and there is a R. de l'Ouest with its mouth about where the Columbia River would be.
