Attractive example of this rare title page from Schenk's Atlas Contractus. The beautiful title page depicts a pair of lions, an allegorical representation of Europe as a woman in a chariot pointing to the a massive globe, with Atlas in the background holding aloft a separate globe, with additional allegorical figures and cartographic devices. The Schenk family, with co-publishers, the Valks, were among the most prolific and best known publishers of eighteenth century Amsterdam, issuing prints, maps, books and atlases. Their work was invariably finely presented though was primarily reissued from other map-makers' printing plates, including Visscher, De Wit, Jansson and others. However, their work demonstrates the precision and elegance associated with maps and engravings produced in this important cartographical period. Margins a little grubby but image and colour good and bright.
