An elegant and rare figured titlepiece from this atlas of Italian town plans and views. Title page from "Theatrum Celebriorum Urbium Italiae, Aliarumque In Insulis Maris Mediterranei". The title appears on an elaborately decorated pedestal whilst positioned in each corner are figures representing - Religio, Politia, Penates (household deities, invoked most often in domestic rituals) and Lares (guardian deities in ancient Roman religion). Johannes Janssonius Jr. (1588-1664) was the son of the bookseller and publisher, Johannes Janssonius of Arnhem (ie. Janssonius, the elder) and whose business gre w to rival that of the Blaeu family - the two most active atlas publishing firms of seventeenth century Amsterdam.
