A fine example of the monumental titlepage and the decorated contents leaf from one of cartography’s finest atlas productions. Strongly and attractively coloured examples from Jaillot's renowned “Atlas Nouveau”, inspired by the work of the great French mapmaker, Nicolas Sanson.. On the death of N. Sanson, his firm passed to his sons Guillaume and Adrien who took Alexis Hubert Jaillot into partnership in 1671, and he was to become second only to Sanson himself among the early school of French cartographers. Jaillot utilised Sanson’s cartography but had the maps produced at a much larger scale with elabroate and ornate decoration particularly of the titlepieces, the atlases often being coloured, in house, in full bright wash colour. Many carto-historians then and since have regarded this atlas series as one of the finest book productions of any period and a remarkable testament to the splendour of French aspirations of the period. This titlepage mirrors the grandeur of the maps in a large architectural surround flanked by Mars and Pallas, beneath are engravings of the battles at Cassel and Senef. Above are images of the French Hercules with King Louis and the Dauphin to either side. The whole is a celebration of French position and power. The contents leaf has an engraved surround with blank inner panel onto which either a pasted label, or as here, manuscript list of the volumes content appears. Four elaborate allegorical scenes are shown, including Atlas holding the World aloft and an illustration of a woman beside a celestial globe, with pointer and compass, along with two winged gods in the heavens. At the bottom, a finely engraved library scene is shown, including a large globe, atlas and map. title piece engr size 470 by 360mm (18.5 by 14.25 inches) contents leaf engr size 530 by 430mm (20.75 by 17 inches).
