Regni Angliae : F. De Wit

Three sheets making up an impressive and colourful map of England and Wales with ornamental title cartouches incorporating classical figures. Frederick De Wit (1610-1698) was a prolific Dutch engraver and publisher, active in Amsterdam in the second half of the seventeenth century. He acquired a number of copperplates from the sale of the Blaeu and Jansson stocks to supplement his own plates, thus having a stock of about four hundred maps. De Wit's own maps are noted for the fine standard of engraving, invariably well designed and decorative. They were very popular amongst his contemporaries, being reprinted many times both by himself and his successors, the Mortiers. These three sheets had always been regarded as "stand alone" maps, south-east, south-west and north regions. However it has recently been shown that the three plates could have been trimmed and mounted together, with infilling ornamental sections, to create a single wall map of the country. In fine condition and strong original wash colour it is also unusual to find the three sheets still together.
