A decorative and early map of the Arabian peninsula, derived from Ptolemy's "Geographica". Finely engraved by the "Father of modern geography", Gerhard Mercator's interpretation includes a large and elaborate cartouche, and is more accurately fitted to the source material than previous maps drawn from Ptolemy the Gulf being typically displayed as a large rectangular sea. This early printing of the plate retains the decorative elements of a sea monster and fantastic rococo cartouche details. A fine example of the combination of the work of two of the greatest names in mapmaking.
