A fascinating and scarce map originally folded into the German Carl Peters's account of his travels in east Africa with the German expedition purportedly despatched to aid Emin Pasha as Governor of the Egyptian province of Equatoria at the head of the Nile. The map extends from the east coast around Lake Victoria and plots the expedition's route in detail. Encompassing present day Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania this is one of the earliest to show inland detail and marks the locations of Mounts Kenia and Kilim-ndscharo, only recently known to Europeans. Dr Carl Peters was a German imperialist, colonial ruler, explorer, politician and author who was a major promoter of the establishment of the German colony of East Africa. The book "New Light on Dark Africa" describes Peter's involvement in the Emin Pasha Expedition whose true purpose was to establish German influence across central Africa. The map has old folds and nicks now expertly repaired and backed.
