A fascinating pair of plates published in the remarkable volume detailing 'The History and Description of the Great Western Railway, including its geology, and the antiquities of the district' by J. C. Bourne. Recording Brunel's inspired organisation in building the Great Western Railway from London to Bristol, these two plates illustrate, from a scientific viewpoint some of the challenges faced. The 'Section ....' displays the landscape's physical profile along the length of the line highlighting heights to be levelled and depths to be filled. Geological substrata is shown in cross-section showing the various different soil and rock types encountered. The geological map, in bright publisher's colour has Bristol at its centre and extends from Bridgewater to Gloucester and the Severn to Chippenham.
