recent arrival
A fascinating and rare map comprising two sections; the upper map showing detail of the Magellan Straits with 'Australis Terre Pars' extending laterally across from the Pacific into the South Atlantic - one of the first detailed depictions of the Straits; the lower map, on a south polar projection, indicates that area of the undiscovered but rumoured 'Terre Australis' separated from New Guinea and with the peninsula opposite Java and Sumatra marked 'Maletur Regnum', 'Beach' and 'Lucach' appellations derived from Marco Polo's accounts and applied to the 'Terra Incognita' that became Australia. First published in Louvain, Cornelis van Wytfliet's atlas 'Descriptionis Ptolemaicae Augmentum' the first atlas of the Americas incorporated 19 maps of sections of the New World. This example of an important map has had some restoration to blank margins but is otherwise a good clean copy.
