An interesting group of five schematic diagrams, printed from woodcuts with letterpress inserts, of the principal highways emanating from London, with the branches off, and the computed distances marked. This group were added to the posthumous edition of John Speed's "Theatre Of The Empire Of Great Britain" by publishers Thomas Bassett and Richard Chiswell. These diagrams were pirated from John Ogilby's 'Britannia', and are probably the earliest works derived from Ogilby's landmark survey of the English and Welsh roads. These tables earned a stinging rebuke from Ogilby: "Mr.Ogilby to prevent the Injury design'd Him and the Kingdom, by the Publishers of certain Tables stolen out of his book (so ignorantly and carelessly collected & printed, that they are fill'd with false Computations and Directions ...) did print his own ...". Although bound into copies of Speed's atlas these road plans have been generally overlooked and ignored in the literature. Minor centrefold discolouration and expert with two sheets just trimmed with no lack of detail.
