A fascinating and most unusual set of map sheets of varying dimensions but, first issued as a wall map measuring 155.5 by 166 cms, now printed and published to show only the cartographic detail of England and Wales. In the map's original form and when issued as a wall map the whole image included a large decorated title cartouche at top right, large areas of blank encircling sea and part of southern Scotland. However, as a consequence of the map's detail and popularity it was available in a "traveller's" format - only the salient map detail, thus saving paper, weight and bulk; this format could also be presented in a rolled or folded form. Finely engraved, the map is immensely detailed with major localities, villages, gentleman's seats, roads, counties, judges circuits, significant marine engagements dated and so on. The plates remained in use until around 1760 but, despite the map's popularity, its survival in good condition as a wall map, or as a folding pocket map has left few examples to be found. Here the sheets, lacking the extension showing western Pembrokeshire, are in good condition despite a little aged wear and no tears, trimmed close as issued and with the imprints of Philip Overton and Thomas Bowles who had taken over the plates and sold the map " ... made portable either for Cloak-Bag, Portmanteau or Pocket."
