Incorporated into the "Prospect ..." for this sole edition, this is "John Speed's Map Of The Chesapeake Regions". This famous map, engraved by Francis Lamb is described as the "last major derivative" (Coolie Verner) of John Smith's map of Virginia, first published in 1608, but drawing also on the influential, and contemporary, Augustine Herrman map of 1673. The plate was engraved in a vivid and artistic style with topography, forests, etc. shown in profile and with a large and elegant title cartouche. The English verso text gives an up-to-date description of the colonies, adding to the appeal of this sought-after and very decorative map - one of the earliest available to acknowledge Maryland. Excepting negligible lower centrefold reinforcement, often seen, this is a good example with very attractive colour.
