Normally referred to as "John Speed's map of New England" this famous map appeared some forty-seven years after Speed's death, engraved by Francis Lamb after the prototypes published in Amsterdam by Jan Jansson and Nicolas Visscher. Speed's "Prospect Of The Most Famous Parts Of The World..." was the first world atlas produced by an Englishman in England and, when first published in 1627, incorporated just two maps of the New World, a general one and one of Bermuda. After the first issue the atlas was republished occasionally but it was not until its last edition, by the publishers Thomas Bassett and Richard Chiswell, that significant new maps (including this) were added to the original group. This map utilises information from the Jansson/Visscher series, and extends from New Jersey, through New England, to Penobscot Bay, and has some updated information and many of the names presented in English. Vignette illustrations show various native animals and, on the verso, a full text describes the region. Published only in one edition, this is an attractive example of this sought-after map.
