A large scale and detailed map extending the length of the Mediterranean and east to include all Persia and Arabia. At each side panels of text describe the Alexandrian and Roman Empires with tables for the locating of certain towns on the map. Extensive inland detail is given and two inset maps show Ancient Europe and Greece. Printed from two copperplates on two sheets joined this is typical of the very informative and decorative maps found in Chatelain's encyclopeadic work "Atlas Historique". Unfortunately, this example of a fascinating map has required extensive restoration. Originally the wash colour would have been a bright blueish green which has oxidised and turned brown. This process has also weakened the paper and necessitated backing support and surface frontal strengthening. As a consequence the map actually looks as some might expect an old map to look - age-toned on paper with a vellum appearance and very suitable for framing. Priced accordingly.
