recent arrival
Engraved by Robert White, this titlepage replaced one used from 1612 to front John Speed's atlas of British county maps and subsequently, from 1627, British and World maps. The titlepage to "The Theatre Of The Empire Of Great Britaine" is based on the design of a monumental architectural framework that had appeared on an earlier Ortelius titlepage and includes, in a somewhat more ornate form, the figures of a Romane, a Britaine, a Saxon, a Dane and a Norman - each representing, according to Shirley in "Courtiers And Cannibals", "the conquerors (or supposed inhabitants) of Great Britain and they are each garbed according to their epoch". A crisp uncoloured example, trimmed close and laid down but very acceptable.
