A rare and interesting tinted lithograph showing a plan and view of one of the proposed schemes to build a pier from the mainland to the island of Birnbeck just off the north side of Weston-Supar-Mare ( not to be confused with Weston's Grand Pier, built much later). The pier would have allowed larger boats and steamers safer mooring and easier access over the extensive, shifting, muddy and sandy coastline of this part of the Bristol Channel. Drawn by Walters and lithographed in Bristol by Pocock, the plate was offered free to subscribers to the Westonian & Somerset Mercury, still operating today but established just two years earlier in 1843.
