A scarce and sought-after map of London showing the city after the Great Fire of 1666. The map extends from Shoreditch in the north to Lambeth in the south and from St James's in the west to Wapping in the east. Beneath the map is an inset view (on a curtain) of the city ablaze with flames towering above St Paul's Cathedral - this inset view is titled "Londons Brandt". The map's overall title appears on a banner at upper left flanked by the Royal arms and the arms of the City of London. This example of the map is the German variant of the second state of the map, as recorded by Howgego - the title beneath the upper right inset plan of the model for rebuilding is in German (and is not to be confused with the second state Dutch example by Doornick). Sometimes published as a broadsheet German text and an explanation of the numbered buildings beneath, this example lacks any textual description and an imprint. Trimmed close with protective margins added. Nevertheless a scarce map of an important subject. Scouloudi records three examples of the Gerlin map - the example in the Sutherland collection also has no text.
