This immediately engaging aquatint shows the London and Bath Steam Coach fully laden and ready for departure. The coach sits outside a most welcoming 'Ale House' with plumes of steam shown appearing from the coach and a most satisfied bunch of passengers aboard. A soldier in full dress, travelling ladies and gentleman, as well as the coach driver, are looked upon by other passing figures. A mileage post sits in the print's foreground and a mill is discernible in the distant. This attractive image is trimmed to the edge, with added protective margins, and with the names of Thomas McLean (the publisher) and Pyall (the engraver) still visible, along with a Whatman watermark to the paper, the aquatint may be dated to c.1830. A fascinating and amusing record of this intermediate mode of transport, between horsepower and engine-power.
