A good crisp printing of John Speed's renowned map of the county of Yorkshire. This very attractive general map of the county is unusual in having none of the illustrative features typical of Speed maps, these being reserved for the separate maps of the Ridings, nevertheless allowing for greater detail to be shown of this large county. This finely engraved map is one of the most sought after of the county and was produced by John Speed, historian, genealogist and cartographer for publication in his "... Theatre Of The Empire Of Great Britain ..." – the first atlas of the British Isles. This example has English text on the alternate side of the map. The copperplate, engraved in the workshop of Amsterdam master map engraver, Jodocus Hondius, about 1610 was first published in atlas form in 1612 with editions appearing, with alterations and marked degradation to the print definition for almost the next 170 years - a mark of their popularity. Centrefold crease reinforced but overall a good and attractive example of an important and decorative map.
