This is the frontispiece portrait, engraved by S. Savery, appearing in post-humous editions of John Speed's famous atlas, 'Theatre of the Empire of Great Britaine'. John Speed (1552? - 1629), historian, cartographer and antiquary, is seated, wearing fur trimmed robes, a white ruff, and wide brimmed hat, and holding a compass on a chart on the table in front of him, with a curtain in the top right corner. Speed produced the first world atlas by an Englishman, entitled 'A Prospect of the Most Famous Parts of the World', which first appeared in London in 1627. Repairs to lower margins, not affecting the printed surface. Slight staining on right margin, printed area barely affected. A crisp impression.
